A beginner's guide to filing your income tax return in Bangladesh

Filing for the first time feels intimidating mostly because nobody explains the shape of the process up front.

If you have never filed an income tax return in Bangladesh before, the process is more procedural than mysterious once you know the shape of it. Start by getting your e-TIN (electronic Taxpayer Identification Number) if you do not already have one. This is done online through the NBR's portal and is a prerequisite for everything else. Once you have a TIN, filing a return each year within the deadline set by NBR is generally mandatory for TIN holders, even in years where your income falls below the taxable threshold (in which case you file a "nil" or minimal return). Next, gather your documents: your salary certificate or income statement from your employer, bank interest certificates, any rental income records, and proof of investments you want to claim rebates on (savings certificates, DPS, insurance premiums, and similar approved instruments). Then work out your total income across all heads (salary, house property, business, capital gains, and other sources) and apply the exemptions you are entitled to (house rent, medical, conveyance allowances have specific exemption rules) to arrive at your taxable income. Our income tax calculator walks through exactly this breakdown. Finally, you can file either on paper at your circle tax office or, increasingly, through NBR's online return submission system. Keep a copy of your submitted return and the acknowledgment receipt: you will need it for visa applications, loan applications, and general record-keeping. If your situation involves business income, capital gains, or anything beyond a straightforward salary, it is worth consulting a tax advisor, since the rules around deductions and rebates have enough edge cases that professional advice pays for itself.
