How FDR and DPS maturity is calculated

Both products earn interest that is added to your balance at regular intervals, so you earn interest on interest. For this calculator, interest accrues every month at the annual rate divided by 12, and is credited to the balance every 1, 3, 6 or 12 months depending on the option you pick. Any interest still waiting when the term ends is credited at maturity. Tax is then taken from the total interest earned.

FDR example

Deposit ৳5,00,000 for 3 years at 9% with quarterly compounding. Each quarter earns 2.25% on the running balance, giving a gross maturity of about ৳6,53,000. After 10% source tax on the interest, you receive around ৳6,37,700. Use the calculator above for the exact figure.

DPS example

A DPS builds savings gradually: each monthly instalment starts earning interest from the month it is deposited, so early instalments earn the most. A ৳5,000 monthly DPS over 5 years deposits ৳3,00,000 in total. At 9% with quarterly compounding and 10% tax, that grows to about ৳3,71,350 — roughly ৳71,350 of net interest on top of what you put in.

Tips for choosing a deposit

  • Compare the net return after tax, not just the headline rate.
  • Ask whether interest is credited monthly, quarterly or at maturity: it changes the final amount.
  • Check the penalty for early encashment before locking in a long term.
  • Compare rates across banks on our FDR rate comparison page.

Frequently asked questions

How is FDR maturity calculated?

Interest accrues each month at the annual rate ÷ 12 on the running balance and is added to the balance at the bank's compounding interval (monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly). The maturity amount is your deposit plus all interest, less source tax on the interest.

What is the difference between FDR and DPS?

An FDR (fixed deposit receipt) is a single lump sum locked for a fixed term. A DPS (deposit pension scheme) is a fixed amount deposited every month for a set number of years, so you build up savings gradually and earn interest on each instalment.

How much source tax is deducted on FDR interest?

Banks deduct tax at source from deposit interest. The commonly applied rate is 10% for account holders with a TIN and 15% without one, but rules change with each budget, so confirm the current rate with your bank or the National Board of Revenue (NBR). You can switch the rate in the calculator.

Does a higher compounding frequency earn more?

Yes, slightly. The more often interest is added to the balance, the sooner it starts earning interest itself. Monthly compounding beats yearly at the same quoted rate, though the difference is modest over short terms.

Is the DPS result exact?

It is a close estimate. This calculator assumes you deposit at the start of each month and that interest is credited at the compounding interval you choose. Banks differ in how they time deposits and credit interest, so the actual maturity value can vary slightly.

Are excise duty and other charges included?

No. Only source tax is modelled. Some banks also charge excise duty on balances above certain amounts, and early encashment usually earns a lower rate, so check your bank's terms.
