How zakat is calculated

Zakat is an obligatory annual payment of 2.5% on wealth that stays above the nisab for a full lunar year. The calculation has four steps: add up your zakatable assets, subtract debts that are due, compare what is left with the nisab, and if it is at or above the nisab take 2.5%.

Nisab in bhori and grams

In Bangladesh gold and silver are weighed in bhori (also written vori or tola), where 1 bhori is 11.664 grams. The two traditional thresholds are:

BasisBhoriGrams
Gold7.5 bhori87.48 g
Silver52.5 bhori612.36 g

To turn a threshold into taka, multiply it by today's price per bhori. Because gold is far more expensive than silver, the silver nisab is a much smaller amount of money.

Worked example

Say you hold ৳6,00,000 in savings and ৳4,00,000 in gold, and you owe ৳1,00,000 in short-term debts. Net wealth is ৳9,00,000. If it exceeds the nisab, zakat due is 2.5% × ৳9,00,000 = ৳22,500.

What counts and what does not

  • Counts: cash and bank balances, gold and silver, shares held for returns, trade stock, money owed to you.
  • Usually excluded: your home, vehicle, furniture and clothes you use day to day.
  • Deductible: debts due soon. Ask a scholar how to treat long-term mortgages and business loans.

Frequently asked questions

What is the nisab for zakat in Bangladesh?

The nisab is the minimum wealth above which zakat becomes due. It is measured as 7.5 bhori (87.48 g) of gold or 52.5 bhori (612.36 g) of silver, at 11.664 g per bhori. You pay zakat if your net zakatable wealth, held for a full lunar year, is at or above the nisab.

Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?

Scholars differ. The silver nisab is a much lower amount, so more people fall above it, and many scholars and institutions recommend it as the safer, more inclusive measure. Others use the gold nisab. This calculator lets you choose; if you are unsure, ask a scholar you trust.

What is the zakat rate?

Zakat on cash, gold, silver, savings, trade goods and money owed to you is 2.5% (one-fortieth) of your net zakatable wealth.

Which assets are included in zakat?

Generally: cash in hand and bank, gold and silver (including jewellery, per most scholars), shares and investments held for returns, stock held for trade, and money lent that you expect to be repaid. Your home, car and personal items for everyday use are normally excluded.

Can I deduct my debts?

Most scholars allow you to deduct debts that are due soon, such as instalments, bills and loans payable within the year, from your zakatable wealth. Enter them in the liabilities field. Views differ on long-term loans, so check with a scholar.

Does this calculator give a religious ruling?

No. It does the arithmetic using commonly accepted figures. Rulings on assets such as jewellery, provident funds, shares and business inventory vary between schools and scholars, so treat the result as an estimate and consult a qualified scholar for your situation.
