Bangladesh land measurement units explained
Land in Bangladesh is usually quoted in katha, bigha or decimal (shatak), while building plans and apartment sizes use square feet. The table below gives the standard conversions used on this page.
| Unit | Square feet | Relation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 chatak (ছটাক) | 45 | 1/16 katha |
| 1 katha (কাঠা) | 720 | 16 chatak |
| 1 decimal (শতাংশ) | 435.6 | 1/100 acre |
| 1 bigha (বিঘা) | 14,400 | 20 katha, about 33 decimal |
| 1 acre (একর) | 43,560 | 100 decimal |
Worked example
A plot of 5 katha is 3,600 square feet, about 8.26 decimal or 0.25 bigha. At ৳12,00,000 per katha the plot costs ৳60,00,000, which works out to about ৳7,26,000 per decimal.
Before you buy land
- Check the area on the deed, the khatian and the mutation record, not just the seller's figure.
- Ask which katha the seller means. In some places the local katha is a different size.
- Compare plots using the price per decimal or per square foot so different units don't mislead you.
