Gold Price Rollercoaster: Why the Bhori Rate Swung From ৳2.23 Lakh to ৳2.48 Lakh This August

August 30, 20264 min read

In under four weeks, the price of 22-karat gold in Bangladesh climbed from ৳2.23 lakh to a peak of nearly ৳2.48 lakh per bhori, then pulled back to ৳2.41 lakh. If you are planning a wedding purchase, topping up jewellery savings, or simply trying to understand why the rate on the shop counter keeps changing, here is what is actually driving it and what it means for your next purchase.

Walk into any jewellery shop on Dhaka's Tanti Bazar or Chittagong's Jubilee Road this week and you will likely be quoted a different 22-karat rate than you would have heard just three days earlier. That is not a sales trick. Gold in Bangladesh is now one of the most actively repriced consumer goods in the country, with the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) revising official rates almost daily to track global bullion swings and the taka's exchange rate.

The numbers tell the story. On August 4, 2026, 22-karat gold stood at ৳2,23,074 per bhori (11.664 grams). By August 25 it had jumped to ৳2,46,110, then rose again on August 27 to a fresh high of ৳2,47,743 following a single-day increase of ৳1,633. Just two or three days later, by August 29-30, the rate had eased back to ৳2,40,628 a pullback of over ৳7,000 in a matter of days.

What Is Actually Moving the Price

Three forces are doing most of the work. First, international spot gold prices, which BAJUS uses as its base reference, have been volatile on shifting expectations about US interest rates and safe-haven demand tied to global uncertainty when global gold rallies, Bangladesh's price follows within a day or two. Second, the taka-dollar exchange rate matters directly, since gold is imported and priced internationally in dollars; any softness in the taka pushes local prices up even if the dollar gold price is flat. Third, seasonal domestic demand around wedding season and festival buying adds short-term pressure on jewellers' margins and premiums.

It is worth remembering that the BAJUS-quoted rate is a metal-only benchmark. What you actually pay at the counter includes a design-dependent making charge on top of that rate, plus 5 percent government VAT applied to the final bill. Two shops quoting the same bhori rate can still hand you very different invoices depending on the intricacy of the design and their making-charge policy, so it always pays to ask for the making charge as a separate, itemised line before agreeing to buy.

One bhori equals 11.664 grams. Silver, while a tiny fraction of gold's price, has quietly tracked a similar pattern this year, and remains a popular lower-cost entry point for younger buyers and for smaller ceremonial gifts.

Gold as an Investment, Not Just an Ornament

For many Bangladeshi households, gold is not purely decorative it doubles as a store of value and an informal emergency fund that can be pawned or sold quickly when cash is needed. Measured that way, gold has comfortably outpaced bank savings accounts and kept ahead of inflation over the past year, even accounting for the making-charge cost that erodes returns on resale. The catch is liquidity friction: jewellers typically buy back old gold at a discount to the prevailing rate, and that discount, plus any making charge you paid on the way in, is the real cost of using gold as a savings vehicle rather than a pure bullion investment.

  • If you are buying for investment rather than ornamentation, ask about plain gold bars or coins, which typically carry lower making charges than intricate jewellery.

  • Track the BAJUS daily rate (published each morning) before finalising a big purchase waiting even a day or two around a volatile stretch like this one can save a meaningful sum on a heavier item.

  • Keep your original purchase receipt and hallmark certificate; resale value and any buy-back discount depend heavily on being able to prove purity and provenance.

  • For wedding-season buyers, negotiate the making charge, not the metal rate the metal rate is fixed by BAJUS, but making charges are where jewellers have room to compete.

What to Expect Next

With global gold prices still reacting to every hint of a US rate move, and the taka under its own separate pressures, further day-to-day volatility in Bangladesh's gold rate through the rest of the year looks likely. Buyers with flexibility on timing may benefit from watching the rate for a few days rather than purchasing on the first day they visit a shop, while those buying for an imminent occasion should budget for the possibility of the rate moving a few thousand taka per bhori in either direction between now and the purchase date.
