Mandatory e-Return Filing Framework and 5% Early Compliance Rebate

A guide to the National Board of Revenue’s online income tax filing rules for the 2026–2027 assessment year, detailing e-Return portal steps, tax rebate incentives up to BDT 25,000, and compliance deadlines.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is actively executing its mandatory digital tax collection drive for individual taxpayers across Bangladesh for the 2026–2027 tax assessment year. Under official NBR directives, all regular individual taxpayers must submit their annual income tax returns digitally through the official e-Tax portal (www.etaxnbr.gov.bd). Over 4.7 million individual taxpayers successfully completed their filings via the platform in the preceding cycle, reflecting rapid public adoption of automated tax compliance tools.
To streamline filing and avoid peak-season system congestion, the revenue authority has introduced an early submission tax rebate incentive. Individual taxpayers who complete and submit their e-Returns between July and September receive a direct tax rebate equal to 5 percent of their net tax payable, subject to a maximum cap of BDT 25,000. Specific taxpayer categories remain exempt from mandatory online filing including senior citizens aged 65 or above, physically challenged individuals, foreign nationals working in Bangladesh, and non-resident Bangladeshis who may submit physical paper returns upon proper verification.
Understanding tax identification compliance is equally vital for individual bank account holders. Maintaining an active e-TIN linked to bank deposit accounts entitles account holders to a reduced 10 percent Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) rate on interest earnings, whereas non-registered accounts face a higher 15 percent withholding rate. Taxpayers can settle liabilities via bank transfers, credit cards, or Mobile Financial Services (bKash, Nagad, Rocket) and instantly download their official acknowledgement receipts and tax certificates directly from the e-Tax portal.
