NBR Electronic Tax Return System and Tax Rebate Framework

An overview of the National Board of Revenue’s mandatory online e-Return system, filing deadlines, and tax rebate incentives for individual taxpayers.

The National Board of Revenue has expanded its digital transformation drive by implementing mandatory electronic tax return filing for individual taxpayers across Bangladesh for the current assessment year. Through the official e-Tax portal, taxpayers can prepare, file, and settle annual tax liabilities online without visiting physical tax offices. The system has gained rapid adoption, with nearly 4.7 million taxpayers successfully filing returns online during the previous cycle. Mandatory e-filing applies to all regular individual income earners, while specific exemptions remain in place for senior citizens aged 65 and above, physically challenged individuals, non-resident Bangladeshis, and foreign employees who may submit paper returns upon authorization.

To encourage early compliance, the revenue authority has introduced a structured incentive scheme for individual taxpayers. Under this framework, taxpayers who submit their income tax returns early within the designated July to September window receive an attractive tax rebate equal to 5 percent of their net tax payable, capped at a maximum benefit of 25,000 BDT. This rebate is designed to reduce peak-season filing bottlenecks and promote prompt tax compliance. Conversely, returns submitted after prescribed deadlines will lose eligibility for the rebate and face statutory penalty surcharges under prevailing income tax regulations.

Understanding Tax Deducted at Source rate differentials is also essential for individual financial planning. Account holders and investors holding active e-TIN registrations benefit from reduced 10 percent withholding tax rates on bank deposit interest, dividend distributions, and capital returns, compared to the 15 percent rate applied to non-registered accounts. Taxpayers are advised to complete their digital registration early, link their verified mobile numbers to the e-Return portal, and obtain instant digital tax certificates to ensure seamless compliance and maximize available tax benefits.
