Gold Price in Bangladesh Falls to Tk226,340 a Bhori as BAJUS Tracks a Softer Global Market

BAJUS cut the price of 22 carat gold by Tk1,691 to Tk226,340 per bhori on Thursday, with every other grade falling by a similar margin. The move tracks a softer international gold market, where spot prices near $4,120 an ounce reflect a firmer dollar and rising odds of a December Federal Reserve rate hike. The cut reverses a rise from just four days earlier, continuing a pattern of frequent back and forth moves in Bangladesh's gold market this year.

Gold got a little cheaper in Bangladesh on Thursday. The Bangladesh Jewellers Association, BAJUS, cut the price of 22 carat gold by Tk1,691 to Tk226,340 per bhori, with every other grade falling by a similar margin, as a softer international market gave the domestic trade association room to trim its rates for the first time in over a week.

  • 22 carat gold fell Tk1,691 to Tk226,340 per bhori, effective Thursday, October 22.
  • 21 carat, 18 carat and traditional (Sonaton) gold all fell by comparable amounts, roughly 0.7 to 0.75 percent each.
  • The cut tracks a pullback in international spot gold, which was trading near $4,120 an ounce in the days before BAJUS acted, down from levels above $4,140 seen earlier in the month.
  • Analysts tie the global pullback to a firmer US dollar and rising odds of a December Federal Reserve rate increase, which make non yielding gold less attractive to hold.

What changed, and by how much

BAJUS, the trade body that sets Bangladesh's daily gold rates, announced the cut on Thursday, effective immediately. The table below shows the full picture across all four grades the association prices.

Gold typeBefore (Tk/bhori)After (Tk/bhori)Change
22 carat228,031226,340-1,691
21 carat217,767216,192-1,575
18 carat187,032185,691-1,341
Traditional (Sonaton)152,798151,690-1,108

A bhori is Bangladesh's traditional unit for gold, equal to 11.664 grams, and all of BAJUS's published rates already include VAT. Thursday's cut is a reversal of sorts: the 22 carat rate had been raised to Tk228,031 only four days earlier, part of a pattern of back and forth moves that has defined the local gold market for most of this year.

Why it fell: a softer global market

BAJUS sets its domestic rates by tracking the international bullion price and the cost of "Tejabi," or locally refined pure gold, adjusting for the taka's exchange rate. Over the past two weeks, international spot gold has been wobbling rather than rallying. Spot prices were trading around $4,120 to $4,123 an ounce in the days leading up to the Bangladeshi cut, down from levels above $4,140 seen earlier in October, as a firmer US dollar and higher Treasury yields made gold comparatively less attractive to hold.

"Prices are wobbling above $4,100 as geopolitics stoke inflation fears and year-end Fed hike bets," said Lukman Otunuga, an analyst at FXTM, who added that a sustained break below $4,100 "opens a path toward $4,000," while a hold above that level could support a rebound toward $4,200.

The CME FedWatch tool was showing roughly 85 percent odds of a Federal Reserve rate increase in December at the time, according to Reuters reporting on the global market. Higher interest rates make non yielding assets like gold less appealing relative to bonds and dollar deposits, which is the main mechanical reason bullion has struggled to hold its highs even as geopolitical tension, including the ongoing Middle East conflict that has also pushed up Bangladesh's energy import bill, keeps a floor under prices.

What it means for you

For Bangladeshi households, gold is not just jewellery, it is a savings vehicle, a wedding expense and, for many families, a Zakat calculation once a year. A roughly Tk1,700 drop per bhori on 22 carat gold translates into real money on a bride's jewellery set or a family's accumulated gold savings, and if you are calculating this year's Zakat obligation, it is worth checking current rates before you finalise the number, since the value of gold holdings feeds directly into the Nisab threshold; the site's own Zakat calculator and gold price tracker both use the latest BAJUS figures.

For anyone thinking about gold as an investment rather than jewellery, Thursday's move is a reminder that Bangladesh's domestic price, however much it bounces around week to week, is still anchored to a global market that itself has been stuck in a holding pattern since touching its two month low in early October. If you bought gold at January's record high, you remain well below that peak; if you are buying now, you are buying into a market that analysts see as balanced on a knife edge between $4,000 and $4,200 an ounce, with the next Fed decision likely to tip it one way or the other.

What to watch next

Two things will decide whether BAJUS cuts again or reverses course: the next move in international spot gold, and any shift in the taka's exchange rate against the dollar, since a weaker taka would push local prices back up even if the dollar gold price stays flat. With the Federal Reserve's December meeting still weeks away and odds of a hike sitting close to 85 percent, traders expect choppier moves rather than a clear trend in either direction through the rest of the year. BAJUS has revised its rates dozens of times already this year, more often than not in modest steps like Thursday's, so the safest assumption for Bangladeshi buyers and sellers alike is that another adjustment, in either direction, is only a matter of days away.

Bangladesh's Gold Price Drops Tk7,114 in Two Days to Tk217,592 a Bhori

Gold in Bangladesh's bullion market fell for a second straight session on Saturday, with BAJUS cutting the 22-carat rate by Tk5,481 a bhori just a day after an initial Tk1,633 cut. The back-to-back reductions have erased Tk7,114 from the 22-carat price in 48 hours, pulling it down to Tk217,592. Jewellers say a falling local price for raw gold, not a broad shift in international rates, is driving the latest move. The swings cap an unusually volatile October for the metal.

Bangladesh's Gold Rally Snaps as BAJUS Cuts Rates by Tk1,633 a Bhori

Bangladesh's jewellers cut the price of 22-carat gold by Tk1,633 a bhori on Friday, pulling the rate back to Tk223,074 after two days of gains. The move tracks a slide in international gold prices to their lowest level since mid July, as traders bet on a stronger US economy and interest rates staying higher for longer. Silver prices were trimmed too. For Bangladeshi buyers, the swings mean this is a bad week to assume any single day's price will hold.

Bangladesh's Gold Rally Extends to a Second Day, Clawing Back Half of October's Slide

Gold in Bangladesh rose for a second straight day on Thursday, with 22 carat gold now priced at Tk224,707 a bhori according to Bajus. The back to back increases follow four consecutive cuts earlier in October that had pulled the price down sharply. Jewellers say the reversal tracks a rise in the local price of refined gold, and buyers planning wedding season purchases should expect more movement before the price settles.
